Kevin Joseph
Hynes
|
|
Kevin was born in
Ferryland, Newfoundland on August 26, 1932 and moved
to Happy Valley, Labrador in 1952. He serenaded the
most beautiful woman in the world, captured her heart
and Josephine Vickers proudly became Mrs. Kevin Hynes
on June 13th, 1959. |

While his Dad was overseas during World
War II, Kevin, as the eldest, left formal schooling at
a very young age and joined a fishing crew. A
tortuous start to every fishing season convinced him
to seek opportunities elsewhere and he joined a
growing number of men from the Shore in heading north
to work for ‘the Americans’. His career began in a
USAF mess hall and progressed over the years to work
in the Central Heat & Power Plant. He was always
proud of his time with the USAF and appreciated both
the confidence and support he received through the
military and his civilian mentor, Ed Churley. He used
his innate intelligence to attain certification and
accreditation as a Stationary Power Engineer,
undergoing extensive schooling in Ohio and eventually
obtaining his GED in later years to augment his
practical education. Both he & Josephine placed great
emphasis on their children obtaining a good education
and his perseverance and desire served as a wonderful
example to his children. He was nicknamed “the Chef”
at the plant and Kevin proudly took on the honor of
cooking the most amazing meals for the boys on shift
work. |
|
He was known for his great sense of
humour and his smile could light up the nation, he had
the ability to make you believe when you think you
couldn’t. His first passion lay with his family and
his second passion lay with helping as many people as
he possibly could, with particular attention to
children and senior citizens. He had an infectious
laugh and accepted everyone on their own terms. He
fondly recalled his friendships with Innu, Inuit and
Métis people of Labrador and always looked forward to
a hunt or just time on the land. He worked with
like-minded people like Mr. Francis Penashue to create
Christmas miracles for children in Sheshatshui and, no
matter the circumstances, was able to provide the
necessary Christmas gifts. He was also very proud of
being part of the group that secured the first car to
provide some affordable transportation to Happy
Valley’s Senior Citizens. |
|
He was a proud Charter and Fourth
degree member of Bishop Lionel Schaeffer Council #6378
in Happy Valley, serving as Grand Knight on many
occasions and for many years. He also served the State
Council faithfully as District Deputy for Labrador and
his proudest moments were when Councils from Happy
Valley, Labrador City or Wabush walked away with State
and Supreme Awards for their service to church,
families and communities. He was always interested in
finding new ways of engaging members and responding to
the needs of the parish, fraternal brothers and
families and his community. He was a faithful member
of Our Lady Queen of Peace parish and served on Parish
Council at different times. As Grand Knight, he
reached out beyond the parish to forge bonds with
members of other civic groups in the area;
establishing lasting relations and undertaking many
joint projects with members of the Shriners and
Masonic Lodge, the Kinsmen and Kinettes, and the Lions
Club. Through his tenure as Grand Knight, he
established a legacy of support for coastal
communities, schools, sports groups theatre and arts
groups, youth activities, libraries, supporting
medical travel and support for persons in crisis
through-out Labrador. He was a leader in all that he
undertook. |
|
He delighted in the social aspects of
Council life (and before that was no stranger to dance
floors at many of Goose Bay’s messes and NCO clubs and
the Boat Club) and always sought new ways of keeping
the membership entertained. He became Goose Bay’s
Lord of Dance and, while his dance card was always
full, the last dance he always reserved for his
sweetheart, Josephine. He amazed many with his foot
work and even the young wished they could move like
him. He had a zest for having fun, was a renowned
practical joker, but laughed hardest when he was the
brunt of some payback. He was always the life of the
party and his presence will be sadly missed. He was
the most amazing storyteller and mesmerized us all
with his tales of the good old days. |
|
He had the voice of an angel and
delighted all with his repertoire. At his last stay in
the hospital he serenaded the nurses with his version
of Silent Night and they rushed down the hall to see
who had that amazing voice. He was renowned for his
wit and love of song and he had a song for us all.

|
Christmas was a special time for Kevin
and he traveled the Labrador forests looking for the
perfect Christmas tree for his family. He was the only
man known that could take three sparse spruce trees
and turn it into the most spectacular Christmas tree
for his family. |
|
His love for Labrador, the wildlife and
yes even the cold Labrador weather were no match to
his warm heart. Labrador has lost a son but heaven has
gained an angel. Always a gentle man and forever a
gentleman. |
