Obituary of Irene Thompson

Ruth Annie "Irene" Thompson, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday November 22, 2019 at Primrose Cottage Special Care Home in Lower Millstream. She was born May 8, 1926 in Highfield, Queens County to Robert and Nettie Ward (nee Robinson) and was wife of the late Harold Thompson.

Irene attended school in Highfield and had many happy memories of growing up there. She earned her Emergency Wartime Teachers Licence in 1943 and taught at Phillipstown and Codys, Queens County. In 1945, she was hired on at NB Tel and worked as a telephone operator in Sussex for many years until it closed. She worked and helped out on the family farm in Kierstead Mountain which she operated with her husband Harold and daughter Nancy. Irene lived in Kierstead Mountain for 68 years and was very proud in later years to have been the oldest person living on the mountain. Irene enjoyed spending time with family, listening to music, talking on the phone, and reading books. She also enjoyed going for drives with her family and friends and attending local music shows. She was a woman of faith and found great comfort in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Kierstead Mountain United Baptist Church. Irene was involved in many Church groups such as the Ladies Aid, Young at Heart, Bible Study, and the Woman's Missionary Society. At one time she was a member of the Women's Institute in Codys.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Stewart (Dave) of Searsville, grandsons Jeremy and Alex Stewart and special cousins Beth and Brian Wiebe of Quispamsis. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Harold, brother Lloyd Ward, in-laws Thomas and Pearl Thompson (nee Chown), sister-in-law Greta Webster (Lawrence), brother-in-law Fred Danks (Della), and special cousin Lois Jones.

The family would like to thank Lynn Wallace and the staff of Primrose Cottage as well as Extra Mural for their excellent and compassionate care of Irene this past year.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506-433-1176) from where visitation will be held on Monday, November 25, 2019 from 6 to 8 pm.  Funeral service will be held from Keirstead Mountain United Baptist Church on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 10:30am.
