Obituary of Walter H. Shields

The death of Walter “Sonny” H. Shields of Sussex occurred on February 4, 2005 at his residence. Born at the Head of Millstream, he was the son of E. Earl Shields of Sussex and the late Marjorie (Hayes) Shields. Sonny is survived by his father, his sister Phyllis McElroy and her husband Malcolm of Sussex Corner, nephew Craig (Jennifer) McElroy of Fredericton and nieces Janice (Steve) Gillies and Susanne (Fred) Arsenault both of Sussex Corner, one great niece and one great nephew. Sonny had a tremendous love of horses. He would often go to see the races at Saint John, Fredericton and Truro and to Old Home Week in Prince Edward Island, as long as someone could drive him. Sonny and his family have a deep appreciation for everyone who took him to the races and other places. Sonny had a great love for antiques, yard sales and flea markets. He enjoyed going for his daily walks and for coffee with the guys. In his younger years he loved to fish and hunt. Sonny was proud of nieces and nephews for their accomplishments and their families. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday February 7, 2005 at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Eugene Fisher officiating. Interment will take place at Trinity Cemetery, Sussex Corner in the spring. As expressions of sympathy donations made to the Diabetic Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
