Gene Sleep

Obituary of Gene Sleep

It is with great sadness that the family of Eugene Herbert Lloyd Sleep announce his sudden passing at his home in Coles Island, N.B. on July 15, 2022.

Gene grew up and attended school in the area.  He retired there after a 29-year career as a welder with the Saint John Shipyard. Gene took pride in his occupation and assisted with the building of several ships which included: supply ships for the Navy and an ore carrier for the Great Lakes Coast Guard. He was an honorary member of the association of 8th Canadian Hassars (Princess Louis) Inc. and received a Canadian Army Certificate of Military Qualification (Armor, Artillery, and Infantry). Gene appreciated working with wood or steel.  He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman.  Gene was a wordsmith and enjoyed reading, writing, and doing crossword puzzles.

Gene is survived by three treasured daughters: Sherry Wood, Saint John; Shelly Cameron (Mark) Moncton; Stacy Sleep, Moncton; as well as seven grandchildren; Brandy, Kristie, Ryan, Rick, Cody, and Meagan and two great-grandchildren, Caelan, and Macie. Gene was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Greta Sleep, his brother Glendon Blaine Sleep, and his former wife, Stella (Paterson) Sleep. We would be remiss if we did not mention Gene’s critter family.  He had a tenderness for animals and a particular fondness for his racoons and cats, Bobby-Coon, Misty, and Mike.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Dr, Sussex NB (506-433-1176). There will be no visitation, but a small, private celebration of life held at a later date. Condolences to the family and donations to the charity of your choice can be made through the Wallace Funeral Home.
