Obituary of Mae Louise Connell

Mae was born in Codys on February 19, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (Chisholm) Starkey. Mae was born, grew-up and attended school in Cody's. Following grade ten she continued her education and took a Secretarial Course at Business College. Mae recounted a story of when she was young and going to school, she had a sled dog named Rover, which her father used to harness and hitch to a sled in the winter that would take her and her friends to and from school. Mae was very sickly as a child growing up, but it wasn't until later years that she had allergies to many things on the farm. In May of 1946, Mae married Arnold Connell and they were wed for almost 25 years. They owned and operated a store in Lower Millstream for several years until their son Allan was born, when they moved to Fredericton. In 1970 Arnold passed away unexpectedly, at the age of 51 of a heart attack and stroke while in Montreal General Hospital having surgery. After Arnold's untimely death, Mae moved back to Cody's to a new house that Allan had built for her. Mae enjoyed making quilts, which her mother would quilt for her; the last quilt that they made together was a Centennial quilt. Mae loved animals, sewing, gardening, square dancing and was a beautiful cook. She also enjoyed traveling, she would venture to Ontario to visit her sister and to Nova Scotia to visit her cousins. In 2004 Mae moved to the Kiwanis Nursing Home where she passed away on January 26, 2013. Mae will live on in the hearts of her son, Allan and his wife Lynn of Codys; her three sisters: Connie Hetherington and her husband Arthur of Fredericton, Thelma Slipp and her husband George of Cody's and Virginia Ellison of ON; her grandchildren: Daniel Connell and his wife Jackie and Ashley Connell, Evie Pond all of Fredericton, and Christopher Parks of Edmonton; her great grandson, Liam; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mae Louise (Starkey) Connell passed away at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex, on January 26, 2013. She was predeceased by her brother Harry and by her brother-in-law Dawson Ellison. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB 506-433-1176. In respect of Mae's wishes there will be no visitation. There will be a Service of Memories to honor Mae on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Wallace Community Chapel at 2:00pm. Interment will be in the Coles Island Cemetery later in the spring. Donations made to the Living Memorial in Mae's memory would be appreciated by the family. www.wallacefuneralhome.com
