Obituary of Robert John Meehan

The death of Robert John Meehan of New Line, NB occurred at the Sussex Health Centre on August 19, 2006 at the age of 93. Born at Donegall, Ireland he was a son of the late Robert and Adelaide (Buchanan) Meehan and the husband of the late Marjorie A.(Cunningham) Meehan who passed away in 1992. He is survived by his daughters; Carole Patrick (Ronald) of Pointe Au Baril, ON, Kathleen Hodgin (Clifford) of New Line, Judy Nickerson (Gerry) of St. Albert, AB and Eileen Elder (Donald) of Riverbank, son Lloyd Meehan (Carmen) of Jeffries Corner, 13 grandchildren; Wanda Hodgin, Troy Hodgin (Gale), Robert Elder, Lisa Elder, Andrew Nickerson, Paddy Nickerson, Bobby Patrick, Ron Patrick, Aaron Patrick, Cory Meehan, Shaun Meehan, Sarah Meehan and Catherine Meehan, 4 great granddaughters, sister Isabel Cunningham of Jeffries Corner, brother Hugh Meehan (Elsie) of Smiths Creek and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Margaret Robertson, Sarah McMackin, Eileen MacDonald, Molly Mallory and Adelaide Sherwood and brothers Dan, Moses, James and Andrew Meehan. Robert's family emigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1928. The family of 14 settled in Hammondvale where Robert worked in the woods to help support the family in the early years. During World War II he served overseas and was part of the Normandy Campaign. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and along with his wife Marjorie, actively involved throughout the years. He worked as a mechanic at the Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1978. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9PM. Sussex Branch #20 of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Tribute on Monday evening at 6:45PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday August 22, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Philip Dallimore officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park, Sussex. As expressions of sympathy donations made to the Kidney Foundation, Sussex Branch #20 Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
