Obituary of Joanne Davis

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the death of Joanne Davis. She died peacefully, at home, surrounded by her loving family after a short battle with cancer. Born in Parry Sound, ON in 1931, she moved to Toronto with her family in 1943. After secretarial school and a career in modeling, she worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Toronto. This is where she met her future husband Tom Davis. In 1959 they moved to Youngs Cove Road to take over the Davis General Store from Tom’s father Harry Davis. Here she made many lifelong friends. She worked side by side with Tom in the store for over 40 years. At the age of 70 she retired and took on the full time job of babysitting her grandchildren. She was a member of the Sussex Vale Quilt Guild and was well known for her beautiful quilts, many of which have found their way around the world. She was a volunteer at the Coles Island School and was secretary at Youngs Cove United Church. She was a member of the Coles Island Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Ukrainian Club of Moncton. Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Thomas, her son Randy (Janet) and their family Katie and Connor, her son Gordon (Lise) and their family Hazen and April, her daughter Marcy Malloy (Jerry) and their family Mitchell, Matthew and Madison, her sister and best friend Stella Cooper (Tom) of Etobicoke, ON, her brother Nick Medwyk of Toronto, ON, sister-in-laws Pearl Davis of Truro, NS and Francis Smith (Stewart) of Chatham, ON and many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. A celebration of Joanne’s life will begin with visitation at Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Friday from 4-7PM with the service being held on Saturday August 15, 2009 at 11:00AM at the Youngs Cove United Church, followed by a private family interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Palliative Care Fund of the Sussex Health Centre, Portage Atlantic or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
