Obituary of Don Peterson

On May 9th, just one day after his 70th birthday, Donald Kenneth Peterson suffered cardiac arrest at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on May 8, 1953; he was the son of the late Kristian and Beulah (Thorne) Petersen.

He graduated from Sussex High School and started working at Shoppers Drug mart then moved to Saint John where he was employed with TRA Cash and Carry, it is from here that his health ended his working days, and he went on fulltime disability.

It was in Saint John where he met and married his wife Gail – missing his hometown he decided to return to Sussex. In 2017 his health began to fail more so he had to up independent living and after a nine month wait in hospital, he took up residence in Berwick at the Green Meadows Special Care Home, where he remained for 5 years until his passing.

He made new friends who became like family to him. The staff were so good to Don and he appreciated them all. The cell phone became his best companion – it was his way to keep in touch with family and friends. It also became his entertainment once he found the coloring apps.

Dialysis became a three days a week routine for him and he was so thankful for the staff who worked there both in Sussex and Saint John.

Besides his parents (1999), Don was predeceased by his wife, Gail (2015) and his brother, Richard (2022).

He is survived by his uncles: Charlie Thorne (Doris), David Thorne, Bill Thorne (Jan), Wayne Thorne (Jean), Doug Thorne and Carl Thorne (Emily); his aunts: Ruby MacFarlane (Edie), Joan Ward (Wayne) and Judy Pascoe (Ivan); as well as several extended family members.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Dr., Sussex. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 2:00pm from Riverbank Cemetery.
