Obituary of Shirley McFarlane

It is with sadness that the family of Shirley Gertrude McFarlane announce her death which occurred at Mill Cove Nursing Home on Monday, December 18, 2023. She was born in Jeffries Corner, NB on January 9, 1933, the youngest of six children of the late James and Gertrude (Armstrong) Jeffries.

Shirley attended school up to grade 9 in Jeffries Corner then rented an apartment in Sussex with her oldest sister Audrey where she finished grades 10 to 12.  After graduating high school Shirley worked at the Sussex telephone office and Stedmans department store before teaching school for couple years at Pleasant Ridge and a year at Anagance Ridge.

In 1954 Shirley met Don Duncan McFarlane from Lower Millstream, marrying him March 3, 1956.  In 1957 Shirley and Don acquired their Lower Millstream general store.   During these years they had four sons.  Shirley looked after the four boys while running the general store and Don worked several jobs in addition to helping his father with the mixed dairy farm. 

Shirley was an active member of the community involved in several functions including the Lower Millstream Women’s Institute and Baptist Missionary.  Shirley and Don sold the Millstream General Store in 1977 and moved up to a new home on the family farm.

Shirley and Don both loved the Lower Millstream and rarely left it, but later in life they made several trips visiting their sons as far away as Mile 76 on the Alaska Highway, Alberta and Ontario. They also enjoyed several vacation tours to places like New York, Nashville and their favorite, Myrtle Beach.

In 1999, Shirley and Don moved into the town of Sussex where they would live until the rest of their lives.

Shirley (Don passed in 2016) is survived by her sons: David, Dale, Bob and his wife Susan and Wayne; her grandchildren: Jeffrey McFarlane and Kelly, Jason McFarlane and his wife Caroline, Andrew McFarlane and Matthew McFarlane, Patrick McFarlane and Jamie McFarlane and his wife Maria, Justin Dotto and his wife Alexandra, and Matthew Dotto and his wife Julia; six great grandchildren: Payton, Jaxon, Gabriella, Jonathan, Noah and Olivia.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176).  A Service Celebrating Shirley’s life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 1:00pm. The interment will take place in Riverbank Cemetery.
