Obituary of D. Friars

Mr. D. Bernard (Bernie) Friars, of Creighton Drive, Sussex Corner, NB, passed away at Sussex Health Centre on October 15, 2002. Born in Sussex, NB on May 24, 1930, he was the son of the late Murray and Jessie Mae (Osborne) Friars. Bernie is survived by his beloved wife Connie (Crozier) Friars, his children, Brenda Clarke and her husband Darrell of Wards Creek, Dr. Stephen and his wife Dr. Christine Friars of Wolfville, NS, David and his wife Heather of Sussex, Julie Hunter and her husband Geoff of Delta, BC, his sister, Audrey Kelly and her husband Carmen of Saint John, his brother, Wayne and his wife Gaila of Cambridge Narrows, his mother in law Ina McInerney of Largo Florida, 7 grandchildren, Corey, Megan, Bradley, Caitlin, Abbey, Carly and Scott, several nieces and nephews. Bernie was a retired well-known Cabinet-maker in Sussex. He began his career working with his father at Sussex Manufacturing Ltd. Later hanging his own shingle known as Friars Woodworking. At the age of 60 he began making fiddles. He was a life member of the Sussex Lions Club, a member of the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers and the Penobsquis United Baptist Church. He was an avid biker and a member of the former Sussex Motorcycle Touring Club. In 1993-94 Bernie was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow award for Humanitarian service. Bernie enjoyed golf, the outdoors, Skiing, fishing and hunting and after his retirement he enjoyed repairing clocks. D. Bernard (Bernie) Friars D. Bernard (Bernie) Friars Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where the family will be receiving relatives and friends on Wednesday from 3-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from Penobsquis United Baptist Church on Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 2:00 pm, with Pastor Gordon MacKenzie officiating. A private family interment will take place at Kirk Hill Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada.
